Google Shutting Down goo.gl URL Shortener Next Year

Google Ending URL Shortener Support In Favor Of Dynamic Links

It seems that there's no need for a Google URL shortener any more, with Google announcing they'll be switching off the service this year. You cannot only shorten links but also redirect users to any location within a web page or smartphone app (both Android and iOS).

While this could be upsetting, it really isn't that big of a deal to the numerous other URL shorteners that are available.

In a blog post on Friday, Michael Hermanto, Software Engineer, Firebase, said, "We launched the Google URL Shortener back in 2009 as a way to help people more easily share links and measure traffic online". The company has given April 13 as the deadline for anyone who wants to use the service or has used the service as anonymous in the past. Existing links, however, will continue to be operational after the April 13 date and up until March 30, 2019 - the date in which Google support will end completely.

Lindsey Lohan's Lawsuit Against Rockstar Has Been Dismissed Again
What concluded yesterday was an appeal to New York State's highest court, the Court of Appeals, which didn't fare any better. She also alleged her likeness was used in the game. "But when they asked me to be their spokesperson, I was intrigued".

If you didn't know, Google has a URL shortening service where they take long URLs and converts them into shorter ones using the goo.gl link. Google short URL service provides brief analytics for each link separately to find the source of referrals, browsers and countries. According to Google, Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) are smarter URL's that direct users to any location in mobile apps.

Link shortening is something I literally do at least once a day and it's always goo.gl that I use. Don't panic, though: shortened links will continue to redirect after access to the console is shut off. But consumers can still manage short links through the console until that time.

As for developers, FDL short links will automatically detect the user's platform and send the user to either the web or your app, whichever is appropriate.
