Apple may use own chips for Macs from 2020

Intel Falls On News Apple Will Shift Toward In House Mac Chips

Intel's stock price took a hit soon after the report was published; Apple provides approximately 5 percent of the chipmaker's annual revenue, according to Bloomberg.

Although market capitalization is key to consider, don't invest (or not invest) based exclusively on it.

"Apple has switched the Mac's silicon platforms before, so if anyone can do it, Apple can", said Avi Greengart, research director for consumer platforms and devices at GlobalData. It is calculated by dividing the current market price of the stock by its earnings per share (EPS). Intel told Bloomberg, "We don't comment on speculation about our customers".

For Apple, the change would be a defining moment. Switching to its own chips would critically allow Apple to launch products on its own timelines rather than having to be governed by Intel's processor roadmap.

Apple might be ditching Intel and designing its own processors for the Mac, possibly as early as 2020. They use historic price data to observe stock price patterns to predict the direction of that price going forward. "If you look at incremental R&D spend, it's gone into ways to try to vertically integrate their components so they can add more functionality for competitive differentiation". Northern Trust Corp accumulated 1.11 million shares or 0.01% of the stock.

On 29 March 2018, NanoString Technologies, Inc.

The Apple-developed chips could also pave the way for MacBooks with better battery life.

Apple has been pushing to more tightly integrate the software on its mobile devices with that running its PCs and laptops. Analysts believe those efforts have helped Apple prevent its smartphone competitors from coming up with matching features until at least next year.

It's been speculated for years that Apple might dump Intel processors in favor of its chips designed in-house. More control on when and how to release updates for the Mac line up, instead of relying on Intel's processor roadmap.

According to Bloomberg, Apple now provides Intel with roughly five percent of its annual revenue.

Intel's stock dropped 7.79 percent at the time of this writing. Intel also designs and builds modem chips for some iPhone models so that they can connect to cellular networks and make calls. Released late a year ago, the powerful desktop computer contains a T2 "system on a chip" developed by Apple.

Market players also said that based on the central bank's survey regarding businesses' outlooks, concerns for now had somewhat eased about US trade policy and the potential for the yen to spike against other major currencies. Intel chips will nearly certainly remain in Apple's top-end machines like the iMac Pro and forthcoming Mac Pro revision until the company can produce in-house chips that are capable of meeting the demands of professional Mac users.

Keep in mind that back in 2016, Apple announced its refreshed MacBook Pro series and surprisingly, where the rest of Apple's competitors started using Intel's Kaby Lake architecture, these notebooks for some reason, featured Skylake chips. Since then, Apple has built an all-star team of chip designers, now led by Johny Srouji. Intel comprises about 0.8% of Sequent Asset Management LLC's portfolio, making the stock its 22nd biggest position. Intel has a 1 year low of $33.23 and a 1 year high of $53.78.
