Intel Unveils First Ever Core i9 Processor For Laptops

The Intel Coffee Lake refresh is here, with 6-core mobile chips and mainstream mobos

Intel released a new six-core proc the Core i5 8600 (non-K model) through our benchmark paces.

Chip manufacturer Intel has announced that its eighth-generation Core i9 processors are coming to laptops. We've rounded the new cores for desktop and mobile up in the slideshow below; you can click on each slide to magnify it. While many of these notebooks, such as Samsung's Notebook Odyssey Z, use Intel's 8th-gen Core i7, there are a few that go whole hog and feature a Core i9-8950HK, like the ASUS ROG G703 and Alienware's 15 and 17 gaming laptops. That feature is called Thermal Velocity Boost and can increase the processor frequency up to 200 MHz, which translates to a turbo frequency of 4.8 GHz.

There's no question that there are specific details of Intel's CPU implementations that are proprietary to Intel, but the idea that its core frequencies qualify under that label is simply absurd.

The H series of Intel Core processors brings hexa-core design to Intel Core i7 chips for the first time in the i7-8850H with a 2.6GHz clock speed that boosts to 4.3GHz when needed with a 9MB cache in tow. Content creators and streamers who use 4K videos will definitely appreciate the drastic increase in performance, especially people who game in 4K and upload their gameplay.

Now, while some of Intel's new processors launched previous year, what we're seeing this week is the introduction of both the super high performance i9 mobile processor for laptops, and Intel's 8th-generation processors for its vPro range of business-class computers, which is written up in a separate article to follow this one (and which will be linked to here).

With the exception of the Intel Atom "SoFIA" chip, most of the others are indeed quite old chips, so this decision shouldn't have too much of a negative impact on PC users and companies that bought Intel chips.

Next to them are the Radeon RX Vega M processors, created in a collaborative effort with AMD. However, the i9, i5, and i7 Coffee Lake chips have one tiny drawback, they're not thin or lightweight. We're sure many console gamers will switch to PC in the near future pushed by the superior gaming performance offered by 6-core gaming laptops and computers. Therefore, if you don't mind a slightly thicker and heavier laptop, then an i9 Coffee Lake chip fitted laptop will be a significant upgrade from your current laptop.

Intel's Coffee Lake U series chip is two times more powerful than 8 generation Kaby Lake R with more quad-core chips that can reach 2.3 GHz to 3.0 GHz and cache size from 4MB to 8MB.

In its latest report, Bloomberg adds that Apple, which has used Intel chips in its computers since shifting from Motorola in 2005, will show off a revised Mac Pro next year that will pack an Apple-developed chip similar to the T2 chip found in the iMac Pro.

All these new "Coffee Lake" processors also support Intel Optane memory, delivering higher performance and responsiveness without compromising storage capacity.
