Apple Hires Google's AI Chief, Tim Cook Touts His Commitment to Privacy

Giannandrea, who will be head of "machine learning and AI strategy", is an important addition to Apple's team, which has struggled to stay ahead in AI technology such as natural language processing and computer vision. While Apple's AI is lacking sophistication, John Giannandrea is expected to make some major changes to the AI platform and to put it at the same level as Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant. Metaweb was then creating a database of the world's knowledge which Google finally installed into its system and became the undefended champion of search engines.

What's interesting is that Google has been doing its best to keep all the information about its AI technology secret.

Despite Siri's lagging developments, Apple has been bullish on its voice-based assistant, which was introduced to the public by Steve Jobs in 2011.

Taking over Giannandrea's AI role, Google programmer Dean is the co-founder of Google Brain Team, which focuses on deep learning, a type of AI.

Rowan Atkinson is back as Johnny English in new film trailer
With few skills and analogue methods however, Johnny has to do his all to overcome the challenges that modern technology presents. Yes, it's the same plot as Mission: Impossible and Skyfall all over again .

In an email sent to staff, Cook said: "Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear". He took the role of senior vice president of Engineering from Amit Singhal in early 2016, signalling Google's emphasis on weaving ML and AI into Search. Giannandrea is being viewed as a change to that narrative.

Despite being the first in the space of personal assistant with Siri, Apple has now fallen way behind the completion in the last few years.

When discussing Siri's flaws it's sometimes hard to know how much to blame outdated technology, and how much to blame Apple's unique way of approaching things for Siri's lack of functionality. "I just see no technological basis as to why this is imminent at all". Sometimes that data protection policy is at odds with developing AI, because AI training requires vast amounts of data. Apple relies on publicly-available data, which limits its AI push as compared to its rivals.

More than 3,000 Google employees have signed a letter that's circulating in the company demanding that the tech giant end its involvement in Project Maven, a Pentagon program that could be used to develop drone technology. VP of Core Search Ben Gomes is looking at a promotion in the former department, whereas artificial intelligence is getting its own separate unit, to be managed by renowned computer scientist Jeff Dean, who's been with Google for almost two decades now.
