American Airlines Expands Boeing 787 Fleet

American orders 47 787s, cancels A350 order

American executives had been hinting for months that they would drop the A350 order over concerns of adding a new aircraft type to its fleet.

"This new order is a powerful endorsement of the 787 family's unique passenger appeal and unmatched ability to help airlines open new routes and grow profitably", Boeing CEO Kevin McAllister said in a statement.

The oneworld airline is also deferring delivery of 40 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbodies. "In the end, our goal to simplify our fleet made the 787 a compelling choice".

American has been looking at alternatives for the order for 22 A350s that it gained through its 2013 merger with US Airways since a year ago, and recently outlined a need to make a decision on what to do with its aging 767-300ER fleet.

The airline cancelled a major deal with Airbus for a whopping 22 A350S, opting for 47 787 Dreamliners in a fresh blow to the European manufacturer.

Two US Soldiers Killed In Kentucky Helicopter Crash: Army
Todd Royar, the deputy commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division, was quoted as saying in the statement. A US Marine Corps helicopter crashed during training in Southern California on Tuesday.

American now flies 35 Boeing 787 jets on worldwide routes. All of the new 787s will be powered by GE's GEnx-1B engines.

The 787-8s will replace American's Boeing 767-300s, while 787-9s will replace Airbus A330-300s and older 777-200 widebody aircraft.

Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) has beaten out its largest rival in a key deal to supply the next generation of widebody passenger airplanes to a major USA airline. "Our prior plan would have had us operating five widebody aircraft types, and with today's announcement we will soon reduce that to three", Derek Kerr, American's Chief Financial Officer Derek Kerr, added in the statement. The revised delivery schedule will better align with planned retirements of other narrowbody aircraft.

Boeing Co and American Airlines Group Inc announced Friday that the airline will buy 47 more of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jets valued at more than USD12 billion at list prices. ANA, the Japanese carrier that was the launch customer for the Dreamliner, is the largest operator of 787s, while lessor AerCap is the largest 787 owner.
