Andhra special status: TDP MPs detained during protest outside PM Modi's residence

TDP Protests

On Friday the TDP MPs staged a protest inside the chamber of Lok Sabha's speaker Sumitra Mahajan after they failed to get an appointment with her.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who recently met TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, visited the protesters before they were detained. "It is sad that the respectable MPs were detained when they went to meet him".

A release from the Chief Minister's Office said Naidu spoke over the phone with some of the MPs who have been hospitalized following their "arrest" and enquired about their health. "No case will be lodged against them", a news portal quoted a police officer as saying. They had to be forcefully removed later in the evening.

He said the TDP must fight for justice to five crore people of Andhra Pradesh, adding he would not step back until assurances made in the Rajya Sabha, including special category status and provisions of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, were fulfilled. The hours-long drama ended at night only after the TDP MPs were marshalled out from the House. "By standing against Narendra Modi, we could, for the first time, bring our problems to the notice of the nation", the Andhra Pradesh chief minister said, as per ANI.
