New Mexico pledges 250 troops to Mexican border

Twenty five years ago David Koresh brought an end to more than seven weeks of standoff between his Christian extremist sect and federal agents surrounding his compound near Waco. The troops were sent to the town of Marana, northwest of Tucson, according to Ducey's spokesperson, Patrick Ptak.

The Republican governor accused the federal government of ignoring the border "for almost a decade".

Border apprehensions still remain well below the numbers when former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama deployed the Guard to the border.

"So for President Trump to call up the National Guard is not something that's new and unique", Ducey said in defending the decision.

Ducey said on Twitter that additional National Guard members would be deployed Tuesday.

Abbott said he would add about 300 Guard members a week to the 250 members whose deployment was announced Friday until the total number reaches at least 1,000 troops.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's office says more than 80 of the state's National Guard members will deploy later this week as part of President Donald Trump's effort to bolster border security.

The Arizona deployments began Monday. Some Guard members started arriving at the border as states and the federal government officials continued to discuss what they will do.

The Border Patrol said it caught around 50,000 people in March, more than three times the number in March 2017.

"I don't suppose it's a partisan downside or an id downside", he talked about.

"I don't think it's timely and here I don't think it's necessary but it's just, you know the President trying to bully Congress to take care of a wall he wants and this is just another one of the projects he has", Estrada said.

Ducey said that misstates what the soldiers will be doing. "The Guard will provide air support, reconnaissance support, operational support, construction of border infrastructure and logistical support". "It gets more boots on the ground and they serve in a support capacity, which they'll be very good at".

McMaster says he plans to make a similar offer to Arizona's Republican governor.

"Arizona National Guard personnel will not be used in an enforcement role and will not have any law enforcement powers", he said.

The group didn't make it into the USA, but this is the type of activity the president wants to stop by deploying the National Guard to the border.

The statement says the troops will help law enforcement agencies stem "the flow of trafficked people, criminals, narcotics, weapons, and ammunition trafficked in the state".

Nielsen and Defense Secretary James Mattis said in a joint statement late Friday that they had worked with the border-state governors to identify areas that guardsmen could address.

It said "arming will be limited to circumstances that might require self-defense" but did not further define that.

Trump said last week that he would be sending up to 4,000 troops to the southern border until his proposed border wall was built.
