Vevo YouTube Videos Defaced In Apparent Hack

Some of the popular videos defaced included songs from Selena Gomez, Shakira, Drake, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, DJ Snake, and Chris Brown, among others.

Notably, all the affected videos came from Vevo accounts on YouTube. These videos were unchanged, but their titles were edited to contain the names "Prosox" and "Kuroi'sh", and the word "hacked".

However, the hacker Prosox returned to his twitter account to explain his intention by showing his respect to Vevo and advising them not to leave the control of their platforms to developers who "did not take into account this hacking", and added that he did not delete Despacito and that he had no intentions to harm their customers.

One of the defaced videos was "Despacito". BBC News reports that the targeted video clips were posted by Vevo.

When you tried clicking on the thumbnail, the video was unavailable. The video disappeared just five days after it had surpassed 5 billion views.

Malaysia elections set May 9 with short campaign period
Polling day will be on a Wednesday, an unusual move as national elections in Malaysia are usually held at a weekend. Ramadan, a major festive period for the Muslim-majority country, begins on May 15.

As of now, there is little information as to how all the famous Vevo accounts got hacked or whether or not these accounts have been exploited any further.

YouTube itself was not hacked, and Vevo has confirmed that it has contained the security breach. "We are working to reinstate all videos affected and (for) our catalogue to be restored to full working order".

"We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach", spokesperson Anthi Pantelidis said in an email.

The hackers are claiming they used a "script" for the hack.

According to the Independent, a hacker identifying as Kuroi'sh hacked into Twitter accounts run by news organizations last week. Vevo has an enormous catalog of artists' videos in its stable and it could take some time to restore them all.
