New York Knicks Fire Head Coach Jeff Hornacek

Knicks fire head coach Jeff Hornacek and some big names are candidates to replace him

The New York Knicks have fired coach Jeff Hornacek, the team announced Thursday morning.

The firing comes as no surprise as the Knicks have struggled on offense, defense, and even reference since Hornacek took over.

A team statement said Hornacek had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect along with assistant head coach Kurt Rambis.

Real Madrid 1 v Juventus 3 - story of the match
Juve beat us and made things very hard for us with their tactics but our willingness to keep trying to get back in the game eventually gave us our goal.

ESPN reports the former coach was sacked after a flight back from Cleveland, where the Knicks won against the Cleveland Cavaliers, 110-98. The loss brought New York's record to 29-53, and left the Knicks with the ninth best odds in next month's NBA Draft Lottery. That doesn't mean it isn't something Knicks fans will harp on until the next coach officially signs on the dotted line.

Over two seasons, Hornacek compiled a 60-104 record while attempting to lead a roster and franchise that was in the throes of an overhaul, including the introduction of a new front office after Phil Jackson was dismissed last summer. Those three teams made coaching changes during the regular season, inserting interim head coaches. The Knicks are determined to stay on the course of drafting and player development as they await the return of their All-Star center Kristaps Porzingis, who is recovering from a torn ACL and isn't expected to return until midway through next season. In this competitive market, the glamour of Madison Square Garden coupled with the resources and willingness to pay a lot in terms of coaching salary gives NY a distinct advantage in recruiting available candidates.

It had been reported that the Knicks had already gathered a wish list of their next head coaching candidates which included David Fizdale, David Blatt, and Mark Jackson.
