Sales Of Necco Wafers Spike Amid News Of Possible Closure

You don't know what you've lost until the Necco Wafers are (almost) gone

Word that the country's oldest continuously operating candy company might shut down has people suddenly hoarding Necco Wafers, despite the candy's unpopularity among, well, nearly everyone. According to sales data released by CandyStore.com, a bulk online candy seller, Necco's overall sales leaped by more than 50 percent in the days following the announcement, while wafer sales in particular soared by 63 percent.

The Boston Globe reports 23-year-old Katie Samuels reached out to candy wholesaler Candystore.com to offer her 2003 Honda Accord for all of their stock.

Last month, Necco announced that 395 workers could be laid off if the company didn't find a buyer.

The candy has been described as "chalky", but that hasn't stopped fans from seeking out the Sweethearts Valentine's Day sweets as well as the Mary Janes, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Clark Bars. "I don't have much right now, so I was like, 'I've got this vehicle, and I want all that candy, so maybe they would consider it'".

South Korean officials force closure of US-Korea research centre
He expressed Japan's hope that the issue can be raised at the upcoming summits, which he said are a "turning point". Kono also asked that South Korea firmly implement a 2015 bilateral agreement on those referred to as comfort women.

The Massachusetts-based New England Confectionary Company, also called Necco, is the maker of various old-fashioned candy classics, such as Sweethearts, Mary Janes, Candy Buttons, Squirrel Nut Zippers - and the Necco Wafer.

"I knew it was kind of a silly thing to say, but I'm serious".

"Ms Samuels however did manage to buy 48 rolls of Necco Wafers". She did get her Necco in the end.
