The Labour leader warned that military intervention against President Bashar al-Assad's regime in the wake of a devastating chemical weapons attack on the rebel-held town of Douma risked escalating an already devastating conflict.

Jeremy Corbyn has told Theresa May the joint airstrikes in Syria were "legally questionable", calling on her to publish the legal advice she said she got from the Attorney General.

The prime minister spoke to Donald Trump by phone on Thursday night about the crisis, with the two leaders agreeing to work closely together on the global response.

He said: 'Parliament must be consulted on this. And Britain should press for an independent United Nations -led investigation of last weekend's horrific chemical weapons attack so that those responsible can be held to account.

With U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly mulling his "options" for a military attack on Syria while continuing to issue belligerent threats on Twitter, U.K. Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn condemned the Tory government on Friday for "waiting for instructions" from Trump and demanded an immediate resumption of peace talks.

The shadow home secretary said it would be "outrageous" for the government to launch military action without giving MPs a vote in parliament.

"This is the first time as Prime Minister that I have had to take the decision to commit our armed forces in combat - and it is not a decision I have taken lightly".

"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace".

"The reason they are not doing it is they are frightened they will lose the vote".

BBC diplomatic correspondent James Landale said the cabinet was expected to back the PM, but she seems willing to act without the express support of parliament.

The comments come after Theresa May won the backing of her Cabinet for military action against Syrian forces.

Asked if Russian Federation or the USA posed the greatest threat to world peace, Ms Abbott said: "It's clear that at this point Russian Federation, its role in Syria, what we believe, beyond reasonable doubt, is its role in the poison gas attacks in Salisbury, is a greater threat to world peace than the United States".

During Thursday's cabinet meeting called to discuss the United Kingdom response, she described it as "shocking and barbaric" and said it was a "further example of the erosion of global law in relation to the use of chemical weapons, which was deeply concerning to us all".

Mrs May has described the alleged use of chemical weapons as a "humanitarian catastrophe" that "cannot go unchallenged".

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable echoed Mr Corbyn in saying the decision to deploy missiles in Syria should have been decided by Parliament.
