United Nations chief warns against escalation over Syria

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called the nuclear weapons treaty a ‘milestone’ but acknowledged more needs to be done

"The United States of America will not allow the Assad regime to continue using chemical weapons". Russian Federation and its ally Syria called the attack fabricated and said no evidence of chemical weapons use exists in Douma.

Air strikes by the allies on Saturday hit three targets that Western officials said were linked to chemical weapons development in the Damascus and Homs areas.

Addressing the council, Guterres urged all countries to uphold worldwide law and warned that "Syria today represents the most serious threat to global peace and security".

"You are not only placing yourselves above worldwide law, but you are trying to re-write global law", Nebenzia said after the vote.

"This is hooliganism in worldwide affairs, and not minor hooliganism, as we are talking about major nuclear powers", the Russian envoy added.

By contrast, eight countries voted against the Russian draft-the U.S., Britain, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Kuwait, Poland and Ivory Coast.

France's U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre said the result of the vote sends "a clear message" that Security Council members recognized the need for the airstrikes, and "their proportional and targeted nature".

Facebook scandal explained | Why Zuckerburg is testifying to Congress
While not in widespread public use, the term shadow profiles has been kicking around privacy circles for some time as a big deal. Near the end of the session, Debbie Dingell, a Democrat from MI criticised Zuckerberg's lack of knowledge of his own company.

"Some, who for years have flouted the most basic rules of global law, today are affirming that our action runs counter to the U.N. Charter", said French Ambassador François Delattre.

Karen Pierce, the U.K. ambassador to the United Nations, speaks during an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting on Syria at U.N. headquarters in New York, April 14, 2018.

Britain believes "that is wholly within the principles and practices of the United Nations", she said.

"I call on the members of the Security Council to unite and exercise that responsibility", Guterres said.

Britain argued that the strikes were "both right and legal" to alleviate humanitarian suffering from repeated use of toxic gas in attacks in Syria's seven-year war.

Nebenzia responded saying the environment is "not very conducive for any rapprochement" and "the political and risky military situation we are in now" must be sorted out first.

The United Nations Secretary-General has called on the worldwide community to avoid actions which could escalate the crisis in Syria and deepen the suffering of its people.

The three allies have not given up on a political solution to the Syrian conflict. He said he would have his Syria envoy, Staffan de Mistura, travel to NY as soon as possible to consult with him on the most effective way to accelerate the political process.
