US, allies informed Turkey ahead of Syria strikes, AK Party spox says

Andrew Brunson

On Friday night, the U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S., the United Kingdom and France jointly launched strikes targeting the Assad regime's alleged chemical weapons capabilities after a suspected chemical attack killed dozens outside of Damascus.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday he had discussed with his USA and Russian counterparts potential steps for peace in Syria, after a series of phone calls in recent days.

Government spokesman and Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ said the USA did not use the Incirlik air base located in southern Adana province in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Mahir Ünal, longtime-ruling Justice and Development Party's (AKP) Deputy and Spokesperson, said Turkey was informed about the operaton prior to the strikes on April 14, speaking to private broadcaster CNN Türk.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday spoke over the phone separately with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to presidential sources.

UK, US and France launch strikes on Syria
Russian Federation called the council meeting to challenge the West over the legality of the military action. American President Donald Trump has approved military action in Syria.

"We see this attack as a sanction against the use of chemical weapons and a stern warning to Assad against attacking his own people with chemicals", he added.

The United States, Britain and France carried out a wave of strikes against Assad's regime on April 14, a week after the suspected deadly gas attack on the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Douma.

The ministry said it was of critical importance that "such crimes do not go unpunished and that accountability is ensured in order to prevent the recurrence of similar crimes". "The conscience of the worldwide community carries no doubt to that effect", it added.

Both the regime of Syria's Bashar al-Assad and Russian Federation, its ally, have denied all responsibility for the April 7 attack.
