Getting Tough With Syria and Russian Federation

Chemical weapons inspectors seek access to Duma after U.N. security team faces gunfire explosion

"I spoke to the president this morning, and he said, 'If the Syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again, the United States is locked and loaded, ' " U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley told an emergency Security Council meeting in the aftermath of the us -led bombing raid.

United Nations officials and human rights groups say the evacuations amount to a forced population displacement that may be a war crime.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday reiterated an independent global mechanism be formed to attribute responsibility to the perpetrators of attacks such as the one in Syria's Douma.

"Mission Accomplished", Trump tweeted last Saturday in the aftermath of the US and allied bombardment, vowing to repeat the attack if Syria dares to use chemical weapons again.

While repeating that Syria was responsible for the attacks, Nauert also said the United States had credible information that "people on the ground have been pressured by both Russian Federation and Syria to try to change their stories".

Worldwide chemical weapons inspectors have not yet managed to enter the Syrian town of Douma - and it's not clear when they will be able to visit the town, which was the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack on April 7.

Speaking last weekend, Prime Minister Theresa May said there was "no practicable alternative" than to use force to deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime. Russian Federation and its ally deny that.

While repeating that Syria was responsible for the attacks, Nauert also said the United States had credible information that "people on the ground have been pressured by both Russian Federation and Syria to try to change their stories".

The US, Britain and other Western allies responded by expelling over 150 Russian diplomats, and Moscow, which has fervently denied the British accusations, responded in kind.

"I don't think we sought to change the strategic balance of the Syria conflict with those strikes", Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the Joint Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing.

On several occasions in recent years, Assad has used chemical weapons.

Douma hospital workers who stayed in the town after the army recaptured it have said that none of the people injured on the night of the attack were exposed to chemical weapons.

"Jerry Smith, a former OPCW weapons inspector who worked in Syria in 2013, tells NPR that the passage of time makes inspection more challenging for multiple reasons".

She also strongly condemned "the use of chemical weapons by any party in Syria".

The US, the United Kingdom, and France fired over 100 missiles at targets inside of Syria in a response to an alleged chemical attack in the city, which they rushed to blame on Damascus.

According to satellite imagery displayed by the Pentagon, the three sites were completely destroyed. He said this likely included chlorine gas and sarin.

Moscow had warned the United States before the strike that it could hit back if the United States actions jeopardise Russian servicemen in Syria, and the allies gave Russia an advance warning to make sure no Russians were in the line of fire. Everything the United States wants is to drive the Syrian government into the corner and have the Assad regime step down. "These missiles were handed over to Russian officer the day before yesterday (April 17)", the source said, adding that both "were sent to Russia by plane yesterday (April 18)".
