James Shaw a 'Hero' for Wrestling Rifle Away from Waffle House Gunman

Waffle House shooting

"My deepest sympathies go out to the victims of Waffle House mass shooting and all the members of the Nashville community".

The man suspected of killing four people at a Waffle House in Nashville on Sunday was previously arrested by the US Secret Service for trespassing and being in a restricted area near the White House, authorities said.

A almost nude gunman killed at least four people at a Waffle House restaurant near Nashville, Tennessee early on Sunday and then fled after a patron saved lives by wrestling the assault-style rifle from his hands.

The police identified Travis Reinking, 29, of Morton, Illinois, who was believed to live near the restaurant, as a suspect in the carnage.

In a statement, police said: "A patron wrestled away the gunman's rifle".

Reinking allegedly opened fire at the restaurant near Nashville about 3:30 a.m. local time.

'The Saraland Police Department is aware of the arrest at Waffle House and the accompanying video on social media, ' the statement said.

The man who disarmed the shooter suffered non-life-threatening wounds, including an injured elbow, police said, and some patrons suffered facial wounds from shattered glass. A good Samaritan, 29-year-old James Shaw Jr., was able to wrestle away Reinking's rifle after a struggle, police said. Shaw says it was then that he saw restaurant workers scatter and a body near the front door as the gunman burst through the entrance.

Police cautioned that the suspect was to be considered still armed and extremely unsafe.

"I hope we can bring violence in all facets - not just gun violence, but all facets of violence - to an end", he said.

TriStar Southern Hills Medical Centre spokeswoman Katie Radel in Nashville said two people were treated for minor injuries and released. Three people died at the scene, while another succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

Officials say Reinking is known to both federal and state law enforcement in IL due to previous incidents. Four of the guns seized were given to Reinking's father who, Aaron said, admitted to giving them back to his son.

U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, whose district includes Nashville, said in an emailed statement that the shooting shows the need for tighter restrictions on "widespread civilian access to military-grade assault weapons".

Sheriff Robert Huston in Tazewell County, Illinois, says his department has "no information" on how Reinking got the weapons again.

A total of six people were shot.

"On my Instagram and Facebook everybody's calling me a hero".

Nashville Mayor David Briley said the shooting represents "a tragic day" for the city.

Waffle House called it a sad day for the restaurant's family.
