Tories Accused Of 'Shameless Cover Up' Over Amber Rudd Immigration Target Claims

James Brokenshire

Abbott said Rudd's explanations as to why she had told members of parliament there were no such targets, when in fact there were, "stretch credulity to the limit".

He said Ms Rudd had put an extra £10m into the team that produced the memo leaked to The Guardian to help them meet a target of increasing removals by 10% "in the years ahead".

UK PRIME MINISTER Theresa May has accepted the resignation of her Home Secretary Amber Rudd this evening.

For nearly two weeks, British ministers have been struggling to explain why some descendants of the so-called "Windrush generation", invited to Britain to plug labour shortfalls between 1948 and 1971, are being denied basic rights because of trouble documenting their status.

Mrs Rudd has come under fire over the last week for the Government's handling of the Windrush scandal, where some migrants from Commonwealth countries, who settled in the United Kingdom, and their relatives had been declared illegal immigrants.

The demise of Amber Rudd, once seen as a leading candidate for the Tory leadership, has been even swifter than her rapid rise to near the top of British politics.

The resignation came hours after Rudd said she would stay in her job to ensure Britain's immigration policy is "humane".

Ms Rudd wrote: "I will be making a statement in the House of Commons on Monday in response to legitimate questions that have arisen on targets and illegal migration".

"The architect of this crisis, Theresa May, must now step forward to give an immediate, full and honest account of how this inexcusable situation happened on her watch", said Diane Abbott, Labour's spokeswoman on interior affairs.

Emery to leave PSG at end of season
Speaking in a news conference ahead of Sunday's clash with Guingamp, he said: "I have communicated my departure to the players". I also want to thank the players and the supporters for the past two years here and the work that we have done together.

"Since appearing before the Select Committee, I have reviewed the advice I was given on this issue and become aware of information provided to my office which makes mention of targets".

Ms Rudd's replacement is due be announced tomorrow morning, according to Home Office sources.

In recent weeks both Rudd and May have apologized repeatedly to the Windrush generation, saying all pre-1973 Commonwealth immigrants who don't already have British citizenship will get it, and those affected will get compensation.

The controversy surrounding one of May's closest allies coincides with Britain entering crucial negotiations on a future trade deal with the European Union and amid rising domestic tension over Brexit policy.

Nearly half a million people left their homes in the West Indies to live in Britain between 1948 and 1970, according to Britain's National Archives.

This comes days before the Hastings Borough Council election on Thursday. "But apologies alone are not good enough". Amber Rudd knew of the targets she pretended didn't exist. Her first Tory conference speech as Home Secretary, in 2016, was reported as a hate incident to police after she suggested that companies should be forced to disclose how many foreign workers they employ.

Anna Soubry, a Conservative lawmaker, predicted Rudd may one day return to a senior job in government.

"She is a woman of great courage and huge ability".

This was by far the most damaging admission by the Home Secretary, since it will reinforce the impression of her critics of incompetence and a failure to get a grip on the Home Office.
