Caravan Of Asylum Seekers Gather Along US-Mexico Border

Migrant Caravan Arrives At US Border, Despite Trump's Threats

"We connected with Pueblo Sin Fronteras and the caravan a couple of weeks ago when we learned there were some asylum-seekers who didn't have sponsors in the USA", said Showing Up for Racial Justice co-Director Heather Cronk. She came to Tijuana to counsel the migrants on USA law.

"Despite the Democrat inspired laws on Sanctuary Cities and the Border being so bad and one sided, I have instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security not to let these large Caravans of people into our Country", Trump wrote.

Some have made a decision to seek asylum in Mexico.

If migrants manage to get processed, they would be taken a detention center and interviewed by an asylum officer.

Elected on a wave of fiery rhetoric about immigration, Trump has continued to make closing the southern border a priority in his administration's plans.

Irineo Mujica of Pueblos Sin Fronteras, the group organizing the caravan, says the US refusal is a "farce" aimed at avoiding having to deal with the Central American asylum seekers.

A group of Central American migrants converged at the US-Mexico border yesterday (April 30), the culmination of their week-long journey through Mexico.

President Trump last week pledged to "stop" the caravan, but the migrants appeared ready for a possible showdown.

Palestinians Killed, Hundreds Wounded As Protesters Storm Gaza Fence
Absent confronting Iran with toughness, he said that "a nuclear Iran would endanger the whole world and Israel in particular". Gaza officials said about half of the 300 wounded Friday were hit by live fire, with the other half hurt by tear gas.

Young children - and in one case, a pregnant woman - were detected among people trying to enter the USA illegally through "a dark, treacherous canyon that is notorious for human and drug smuggling", CBP Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said, adding that it was "unconscionable" that children were being smuggled into the country in what he referred to as unsafe conditions. USA officials say many migrants skip their court dates and try to live illegally in the United States.

She said her older sister had been killed by the gang in El Salvador, so she is attempting to join other family members in the Kansas City area. "If you assist or coach an individual in making a false immigration claim, you have broken the law and will be referred for prosecution".

"People who have a legitimate fear of persecution under USA law have a right to present their case", Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the top Democrat on the House subcommittee on immigration, said on Monday. We know where they are. "So to try to elevate this into some heightened sense of threat, it just didn't measure up".

After a final briefing from lawyers and minutes before they were to begin a short walk to the border crossing, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan announced that the San Ysidro border crossing, the nation's busiest, had "reached capacity" for people without legal documents and that asylum-seekers may need to wait in Mexico temporarily.

It's unclear what practical consequences any of these threats will have.

Maria de Los Angeles, a Honduran migrant who is to hand herself in to United States authorities, said she was confident after speaking with her attorney that she would be released as her case goes through the courts because she was travelling alone with her one-year-old son.

The migrants, many traveling with children, left a downtown Tijuana shelter where they had been staying. Asylum seekers must have a well-founded fear of persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular "social group", a broad category that has included domestic violence victims and others.

This is a developing story.
