A U.S. Army soldier was killed in combat Monday in Afghanistan by "enemy small arms fire", according to U.S. military officials.

This 2017 photo released by U.S. Army Alaska shows Spc. He was taking part in the US counter-terrorism mission in eastern Afghansitan when he was killed by enemy small arms fire in Tagab district. The death remains under investigation, the Pentagon said. Prior to his deployment, he was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.

Conde joined the Army in Loveland, Colorado, in August 2015, and was assigned to U.S. Army Alaska in April 2016.

Another U.S. service member was wounded during the combat operation and listed in stable condition at Bagram Airfield's hospital. There, he was participating in Operation Freedom's Sentinel, a counter-terrorism mission to fight remnants of Al-Qaeda.

The flags will remain at half-staff till sunset on Friday, May 4.

Alaska Governor Bill Walker paid his respects to the soldier on Twitter, writing, "Specialist Conde's service and sacrifice to his country is worthy of our highest respect. Byron, Toni, Donna, and I are holding them in our prayers".

Several members of Afghan security forces were also killed.
