In Scotland banned cheap whiskey

The House of Malt in Carlisle is hoping to cash in on the minimum alcohol pricing ruling.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon praised Scotland for being "bold enough and courageous enough" to take the step.

Some say there is little evidence the measures will significantly reduce the number of alcohol-related hospital admissions and will instead unfairly penalise the majority of non-problem casual drinkers.

The minimum unit price (MUP) - which means that a bottle of wine cannot be sold for under £4.69, a four-pack of 500ml beer cans for under £4 and a bottle of whisky for less than £14 - came into effect on Tuesday after a six-year battle with alcohol industry bodies.

Mr Mooney has looked at parallels between the two places, adding that both areas have "some of the most longstanding and concentrated areas of social deprivation and economic disadvantage in the UK", and that the North East region has some of the worst health statistics for alcohol-related harm in England.

Alcohol prices in Scotland are skyrocketing, as a new minimum pricing scheme comes into force.

On average there are 22 alcohol-specific deaths every week and 697 hospital admissions in Scotland, where the misuse of alcohol is thought to cost the country £3.6 billion each year.

Scottish lawmakers say the law will make cheap spirits - like popular strong ciders - more expensive.

Tory MSP Miles Briggs said his party would "await with interest" the impact of the policy.

England had the highest proportion of adults who said they drank alcohol in the previous week (57.8 per cent), followed by Scotland (53.5 per cent) and then Wales (50 per cent).

"We've been supporters of Minimum Unit Pricing since it was first proposed in 2011 and have worked closely with the Scottish Government and our customers around its successful implementation".

"Scotland needs a comprehensive, fully-funded strategy to tackle problem drinking - and any approach to tackling Scotland's unhealthy drinking culture has to see an end to the SNP's budget cuts to support services and alcohol and drugs partnerships. This cash could be reinvested in our NHS and in preventative public health programmes".

Scotland introduced the legislation in an attempt to combat the country's alcoholism.
