Ford halts F-series, Super Duty production after fire at supplier

Last Wednesday's major fire and explosions at the Meridian Magnesium Product plant in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, halted production of die-cast parts necessary for Ford F-150 pickup truck assembly.

The Detroit Free Press reports the truck side of Ford's Kansas City (Mo.) Assembly Plant shut down this week because of the parts shortage, idling about 3,600 workers, with no date set for reopening it. Ford is mulling whether to shut down the Dearborn Truck Plant in MI, which employs 4,000 workers.

Ford's top of the line Super Duty pickup truck now comes in just shy of $100,000. It burns white hot and is hard to extinguish, which is something that Ford supplier Meridian Magnesium Products found out recently when it suffered a major fire that has caused a stoppage in F-150 production.

Ford says that dealers have enough inventory of the F-series trucks to prevent a near term shortage.

Fiat Chrysler said the parts shortage has impacted production of the Chrysler Pacifica minivan at its Windsor, Ontario, plant, and it's adjusting production schedules as needed to minimize downtime.

The letter continues: "The company is meeting continuously to find a solution to replace and manufacturer (sic) parts that were lost due to the fire at Meridian". It is unclear when production will resume. If production is halted, the shutdown could last several weeks.

The F-150, America's top-selling vehicle, is built only at the two sites.

Trump withdraws from Iran nuclear deal; allies regret his decision
Former President Barack Obama , who Trump blamed for the "horrible, one-sided" deal, took to social media to clarify his stance. Criticizing the Obama administration, Trump said that a constructive deal could have been struck at the time, but it wasn't.

The F-150 is made of all kinds of fancy, lightweight materials like aluminum and magnesium, and it's the magnesium that's causing problems with production.

Ford has sold 287,000 F Series trucks in the United States in the first four months of this year, up 4% compared to a year ago. "They can add production, add shifts", Krebs said.

The company has said it is working to resolve the supply disruption. At this time, the company doesn't know for sure when or for how long we will be down.

Mercedes employs about 3,700 people who build about 286,000 vehicles annually at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant, including the GLE and GLS SUVs and the C-Class sedan.

Meridian, owned by Chinese supplier Wanfeng Auto Holding Group, also provides parts to Toyota Motor Corp and Tesla Inc among others, according to the websites of Meridian and Wanfeng.

There are relatively few suppliers of magnesium parts, which means the auto companies could be without critical components for some time.
