ZTE shuts down majority of operations following U.S. government import block

As of now, all major operating activities have been shut down while ZTE tries to negotiate a modification or even reversal of the Denial Order.

ZTE's main business operations have been suspended after the United States government restricted all USA firms to supply China's giant with tech. Now, in a new filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange, where ZTE shares are traded, the Chinese company revealed it has begun to feel the effects of these decisions, though it still has enough cash to fulfill its "commercial obligations". During the meetings, Chinese officials said they also raised their objections to ZTE's punishment with the US team, who they said agreed to report them to Trump.

ZTE says it's in communication with the US government to try and reverse or modify the ban.

The ban that threatens to cut off ZTE's supply chain came amid heightened tension over a possible U.S. ZTE got to this place by selling goods and services to Iran and North Korea, which violated US sanctions.

The Chinese firm did not respond to calls and messages from Reuters seeking comment.

ZTE announced it has shut down operations and closed its online store following a U.S. ban against it.

One ZTE employee said manufacturing had ceased and workers are keeping busy with training, Nikkei reported.

The company announced the move in a securities filing on Wednesday.

Last year, ZTE admitted it shipped US-made parts to Iran and North Korea despite trade restrictions. A request for suspension of the ban has been submitted last Sunday.
