Health Minister Oly Ilunga said seven people with the hemorrhagic fever were hospitalized in Bikoro as of Thursday.

The health minister added that Nigeria was considering sending a team of health workers to the DRC to help contain the outbreak.

Julien Raickman, MSF head of mission in DRC, said: "At the moment there is an experienced MSF team in Bikoro, made up of medics, water and sanitation experts, health promoters, logisticians and an epidemiologist".

At least 17 people have died since inhabitants of a village in the country's northwest began showing symptoms resembling Ebola several months ago.

The outbreak declaration came after laboratory results confirmed two cases of Ebola in the north-western region of DRC.

However, those cases were not confirmed through testing, making this week's death the first of the current outbreak.

The Virus which is transmitted by bats was first discovered in DRC in 1976 and named after the Ebola River. WHO will work closely with health authorities and partners to support the national response. All the neighbouring countries have been alerted.

None of the Ebola outbreaks in Congo have connections to the epidemic that began in 2013 and had left more than 28,600 people dead - nearly all of them in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone - before it was declared over in 2016.

The preventive measures include handling potentially infected bushmeat only while wearing protective clothing and by thoroughly cooking it before eating it.

The General Manager, Corporate Affairs of the Authority, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu said all the equipment and personnel used in combatting the virus in 2014 are still very much at the airports.

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed and declared an outbreak of the disease after two out of five samples collected from suspected Congolese patients tested positive for the Ebola Virus.

Ebola is endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The worst Ebola epidemic in history ended in West Africa just two years ago after killing more than 11,300 people and infected some 28,600 as it rolled through Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. This was well contained through the efficient coordination among the government, health department, worldwide partners and the WHO.
