WHO prepares for worst case Ebola scenario

As Ebola returns to Africa Nigeria attempts to secure its borders

Ebola vaccines will be shipped as quickly as possible to the Democratic Republic of Congo as the number of suspected cases in the latest outbreak grows, the head of the World Health Organisation said on Friday as the agency prepared for a "worst-case scenario".

It can be used to protect people who have had contact with Ebola victims, stopping the spread of disease, but that requires intensive contact tracing, which Salama said could take a week or two just for the cases already documented.

At least 17 people have died since inhabitants of a village in the country's northwest began showing symptoms resembling Ebola in December, according to the World Health Organization. WHO Deputy Director-General of Emergency Preparedness and Response Dr. Peter Salama adds that they are also prioritizing the minimization of casualties.

The funds, he said, "in effect had the potential to function as something we very, very badly need, which is a contingency fund for significant large-scale disease outbreak".

Geneva - The WHO is preparing for the worst case scenario in an Ebola outbreak in a remote area of Congo, including spread to a major town.

'Report cholera cases' He also outlined measures they had in place to avert an outbreak of cholera and advised the public to report such cases to the nearest hospitals.

The Democratic Republic of Congo announced two confirmed cases of Ebola in the northwestern town of Bikoro and that there are 10 more suspected cases of the virus.

"My ministry established the National Health Emergencies Council to work expeditiously to prevent importation of any virus or disease".

On Friday nine other countries countries were issued with alerts, with the regional risk from the deadly disease being classed as "moderate".

Ebola has returned to Africa.

Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told the Washington Post that Ebola outbreaks are risky in an increasingly urbanizing Africa because once infections spread to a metropolitan area, they become much more hard to control. There are now no clinical vaccine candidates available that protect against all four human-pathogenic Ebola viruses.

Ebola viruses probably spread in bats most of the time, but they do occasionally "jump" to other species such as deer, monkeys or humans. Ebola virus outbreak control depends on surveillance and the isolation of cases, according to the study.
