The incident resulted in clashes across the city through the night with several shops and vehicles, including police vans, being set ablaze by rioters.

The report added that the police are suspecting the role of an independent corporator for instigating the violence.

Trouble had begun at around 10 pm on Friday when two groups clashed at Motikaranja locality over an illegal water tap connection.

Internet services remained suspended and prohibitory orders clamped under the CrPC section 144, banning assembly of people, were in force in the city, where large number of police personnel were deployed, a senior police official said.

The condition of ACP Kolekar, who was admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the stone-pelting, is said to be serious. Reports of one casualty have emerged, it is yet to be confirmed by authorities or law enforcement agencies.

Mr. Bansile's shop was among those torched by the rioters and he could not escape as he was disabled.

However, The Times of India reported that the violence was triggered after a few people beat a garage mechanic in the area for refusing to give them money for liquor. Aurangabad CP Milind Bharambe has appealed for peace and has ensured that the situation has been brought under control.

Tension escalated in the nearby areas of Gandhinagar, Moti Karanja and Rosa Bagh as well. If one group is pelting stones, the other group is requested to keep calm not respond, the police is doing its legal duty.

The police have also warned that strict action will be taken against any person found propagating such information.
