5 killed in storm; air, road traffic badly hit

Deadly dust storms ravage northern India, killing close to 100

The weather office has said thundershowers accompanied with squall, with wind speed reaching 50-70 kmph, are "very likely" at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha.

The storm with winds blowing up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour swept western parts of Uttar Pradesh state on Wednesday night, toppling trees and demolishing dozens of mud and brick homes, said Avanish Awasthi, a state government official.

On May 9, several parts of the state were hit by a severe storm that left 18 dead and 27 others injured.

Last week, storm had killed 134 people and injured over 400 in five states.

UP was the worst affected, accounting for 80 deaths, a lot of them in Agra district in the western part of the state.

Saturday was the season's hottest day, with maximum temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius. Flights from Tokyo, Newark and Colombo were diverted to other airports, people familiar with the matter said.

When the Metro services resumed, the trains plied at halting speed.

The strong wind crashed through trees and turned the air a murky brown.

The inclement weather interrupted the launch of a 140 kWp rooftop solar plant at IP Extension attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Several areas in Gurugram and east, west and outer Delhi saw outages that ran up to five hours, officials said.

Now, train services on all lines of the Delhi metro are running as per normal schedule after fix of overhead electricity (OHE) wires.

"This was necessitated due to falling of a tree on OHE wires between Okhla and Jasola stations due to the thunderstorm".

The Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express was also stopped near Sonepat due to uprooting of trees.

A western disturbance, which is a system of low pressure bringing moisture from Eurasian water bodies, and moisture-bearing easterly winds triggered the thunderstorms and rain in Delhi on Sunday, the weather department said.
