Iran nuclear deal: Envoy starts diplomatic tour after USA withdrawal

Лавров рассказал о разочаровании Трампом

During the Sunday meeting, Zarif elaborated on the condition of the Iran nuclear deal before and after the USA pullout and said Washington broke the multi-lateral agreement and flagrantly violated the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

JCPOA was implemented in 2016 after five permanent members of UN Security Council, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and U.S. plus Germany reached an agreement with Rouhani's government to lift worldwide sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic in exchange for Tehran to curb its nuclear program.

He added if the European powers were unable to make guarantees, "we must choose the path of self-sufficiency and nuclear industry with our own capabilities".

According to reports by Iranian news agencies, Rouhani, in issuing his orders on May 12, underlined the importance of securing Iran's economic interests.

Washington's decision to withdraw from the agreement and reimpose sanctions infuriated its allies in Europe as well as China and Russian Federation.

Iran's leaders pushed Sunday to preserve the nuclear deal with world powers after the United States pulled out of it, with its foreign minister embarking on a diplomatic tour to China demanding that the European signatories remain faithful to the accord.

Based on Rouhani's order, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is expected to leave Tehran for Beijing on Sunday, May 13 and then to Moscow.

After China, the Iranian foreign minister was scheduled to fly to Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and then Brussels to consult with British, French and German foreign ministers as well as European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

UN's Top Nuclear Inspector Steps Down
The agency was tasked with conducting inspections to verify if Iran is complying with the terms set down by the deal. The Vienna-based nuclear agency says it has no indications Iran is in breach of the accord, the report concluded.

After meeting his counterpart in Beijing, Mr Zarif said: "We hope that with this visit to China and other countries we will be able to construct a clear future design for the comprehensive agreement".

Before leaving, Zarif published a government statement on his Twitter page, slamming Trump's "extremist administration" for abandoning "an accord recognized as a victory of diplomacy by the worldwide community". "We believe that today China is on our side", he said.

Washington's five other partners in the deal have already taken turns to denounce Trump's attack on the multilateral Iran deal, vowing that they would stick to their commitments under the accord despite the USA withdrawal.

China offers Iran a valuable alternative to trade with the US and Europe.

Trump hit back Saturday evening, tweeting that the accord had failed to contain Iran's militarism.

While announcing his decision, Trump called the agreement "defective at its core", claiming that after the lifiting of the sanctions Tehran "used its new funds to build nuclear-capable missiles, support terrorism and cause havoc throughout the Middle East and beyond".

"Iran's Military Budget is up more than 40 percent since the Obama negotiated Nuclear Deal was reached. just another indicator that it was all a big lie", he wrote.

Trump has said that he would reinstate USA nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose "the highest level" of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.
