Ireland 64/0 following on, 116 runs behind Pakistan at stumps

Irish hopes intact as bad weather derails Test debut

Pakistan declared its first innings on 310 for 9 in the only Test match against Ireland on Sunday after playing 96 overs.

Former England one-day global Joyce, arguably Ireland´s greatest batsman and at 39 the oldest Test debutant since Australia´s Bryce McGain made his bow aged 36 in 2009, appeared to be a victim of the fact the Decision Review System was not being used in this match because Cricket Ireland had decided they could not afford the cost for a one-off game.

Ireland's first Test innings got off to a awful start, Abbas trapping Ed Joyce and Andy Balbirnie leg before and Amir removing captain William Porterfield's off stump to leave them 5-3 at lunch.

And Porterfield had made just three when Azhar Ali made a mess of a routine catch at third slip.

Veteran opener Ed Joyce was lbw to Mohammad Abbas for four before fellow opener Andrew Balbirnie, who might have been run out for a duck, was lbw to the paceman for nought.

Ireland, on the other end, will look to take quick wickets to try and bowl out Ireland below the total of 300.

Abbas struck twice in a 30-minute spell before lunch to leave Ireland 5-3 after Sarfraz's well-timed declaration.

Leg-spinner Shadab Khan continued his fine all-round display by taking two wickets in three balls to leave Ireland 61-7.

But at close of play at 7pm, Ireland were 64 without loss in their second innings, and suddenly Test cricket seemed a whole lot...

Former England one-day global Joyce, arguably Ireland's greatest batsman, appeared to be a victim of the fact the Decision Review System was not being used because Cricket Ireland had decided they could not afford the $50,000 cost.

Porterfield then fell for one when Amir uprooted his off-stump with what became the last ball before lunch.

Due to washed out first day, it is now a four-day match. For Ireland, Kevin O Brien was top-scorer with 40 runs. Last time, Pakistan enforced a follow-on was against New Zealand in Lahore in 2002.

Kevin O'Brien and Wilson - showing great courage after going to hospital following a blow on the arm suffered in the warm-up - got the Test new boys up to three figures, but Shadab finished off the innings by getting rid of Murtagh.

Debutant Faheem Ashraf was dismissed for 83 and Shadab made 55 before the Pakistan bowlers ripped through Ireland, who restored some pride later in the day.

On Saturday, Shadab Khan and debutant Faheem Ashraf saved the day for Pakistan against Ireland as wickets kept falling at Malahide on Saturday.
