Multiple blasts hit Afghanistan; gun battle underway

Afghanistan: Blasts, gunfire rock Jalalabad

Multiple blasts hit the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad today (May 13) in a coordinated attack that killed six people and wounded dozens, police said.

Provincial governor's spokesman Ataullah Khogyani confirmed that the attack ended after five hours of gun battle between the security forces and the assailants.

The Islamic State group claimed it carried out the attack, in a statement from its Amaq propaganda agency.

Militants have staged several attacks across Afghanistan this year.

Sohrab Qaderi, a member of Nangarhar's provincial council, said one attacker appeared to have blown himself up at the gate of the building and another appeared to have detonated his explosives inside the building.

Jalalabad is the capital of restive Nangarhar, which borders Pakistan.

At the same time, Taliban fighters have stepped up the pressure on government forces across the country, from Baghlan province in the north, where they seized a district centre last week, to Farah in the southwest or Ghazni south of Kabul.

At least nine people, including a child, had been killed and 36 wounded, public health officials said.

April saw a series of attacks across the country targeting voter registration centres as Afghanistan gears up for long-delayed legislative elections due in October.

According to Khogyani, at least six ten people, including civilians, workers of the Customs Department, and security personnel lost their lives in the attack.

The Taliban recently launched their annual spring offensive, in an apparent rejection of a peace talks overture by the Afghan government.
