Chinese airliner's cockpit window shatters mid-flight; co-pilot almost sucked out

Flight passenger detained after he opens emergency exit to get fresh air

A pilot successfully performed an emergency landing in China yesterday after a cockpit windshield suddenly broke and fell off during the flight.

However, according to the website of Civil Aviation Administration of China's (CAAC) Southwest Regional Administration, the co-pilot and a cabin crew of the flight suffered minor injuries.

The cockpit experienced a sudden loss of pressure and drop in temperature and when he looked over, the cockpit's right windshield was gone.

A pilot who survived the accident and hailed hero on social media Captain Liu Chuanjian said that the flight was at an altitude of 32,000 feet when there was a deafening sound that tore the cockpit.

The Flight 3U8633, operated by Sichuan Airlines, was en route from southwest Chinas Chongqing Municipality to Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Incidents involving cracked windshields do happen on a regular basis due to occurrences such as bird or lightning strikes but ones involving entire windshields coming off are rare.

Everything in the cockpit was floating in the air.

A Chinese pilot was almost sucked out of a plane with 119 passengers aboard when one of the cockpit windows fell out mid-flight.

After landing, most passengers were transferred to another flight to Lhasa, but 29 passengers were sent to the hospital, one with a sprain and another with bruising, China Central TV reported. The passenger who spoke to China Youth Daily said that he was sitting in the middle of the plane. Most of the equipment malfunctioned ... and I couldn't hear the radio. "The plane was shaking so hard I could not read the gauges", the captain added, according to Reuters.

One of the plane's windshields reportedly shattered about one hour into the flight when the Airbus A319 was flying over the city of Chengdu.

"The oxygen masks on the plane all dropped out".

The cause of the incident was under investigation, it said.
