The Prime Minister said, "The fake news law will be given a new definition so that the public and media outlets will know what is fake news and what is not fake". "We have to act quickly because we don't want to be saddled with extradition from other countries".

Mr Mahathir said he had replaced the country's attorney general, who had cleared Mr Najib of all wrongdoing in the scandal.

He said the government would find out whether or not some were forced to pay, if they had their passports and bank accounts revoked and their businesses affected.

"I have been informed that the Malaysian immigration department will not allow my family and me to go overseas", Najib said in a tweet. He also said he was committed to "facilitating a smooth transfer of power".

Malaysia's new finance minister is seen as a safe pair of hands as he takes on the enormous task of bringing down debt while scrapping a consumption tax that was key to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's unexpected election win last week. There was no sign that Najib or Rosmah had come to the airport.

He said not just those receiving bribes, but those giving will be investigated and legal action would be taken against them. "God willing, [the United Malays National Organization] will continue to live".
