Missing Champions League may not hurt Chelsea, says Conte

Pep Guardiola looks set to claim the Premier League Manager of the Year award come the end of the season, but there's a few bosses that have ran him close.

Antonio Conte is focused only on winning the final game of the Premier League season at Newcastle, not the FA Cup final, so Chelsea can capitalise on any slip up from Liverpool.

Their defensive organisation was embarrassing at times in a performance that did not bode well for the Blues' chances of lifting the FA Cup in next Saturday's final against Manchester United at Wembley.

Just six days before their FA Cup final against Manchester United, the Blues floundered as Ayoze Perez's brace followed up Dwight Gayle's opener to secure a top-ten finish for Newcastle. "You'll have to ask the club about that", Conte added.

"Newcastle were more determined than us", said the Italian.

"I'm the coach. After like this, I'm the first person to answer for this bad game".

But the 3-0 defeat against Magpies ensured the defending Champions finished in the fifth position and also miss out on the Champions League spot for the second time in three seasons. Instead, it was Liverpool who hammered Brighton 4-0 at Anfield booked their place in next season's Champions League.

"I've been working with him for a year and I've progressed a lot under him but it's really up to the club management, up to him and his entourage but he hasn't said anything".

"I like to play to win and this is my first season I didn't win the title".

Conte on Friday was adamant Chelsea's season could not be compared with the campaign prior to his arrival, which he last summer termed the "Mourinho season".

"The most important thing is what the club thinks, not you or the speculation about me".

"As a player, I would be disappointed [if he leaves]".

The Blues needed a win to have any hope of finishing Top Four.

"People say we wouldn't gel together and we're a Championship side, well if that's the case then the manager has got us all together and we're sat in the middle of the table. We have to sit down, talk and see where we are".
