NY killer nanny sentenced to life in prison

Nanny who murdered UWS children faces life imprisonment

A New York Metropolis nanny who killed two young children in her care is dealing with life in jail.

Yoselyn Ortega, the so-called "Killer Nanny", was convicted last month of killing Lulu, 6, and Leo Krim, 2, on October 25, 2012.

She recalled the shock of returning to the family's Upper West Side apartment to find her children slain and their nanny standing over them stabbing her own neck with a kitchen knife.

"My life is in the hands of God", she said.

She said Ortega has shown no remorse, and no one in her family has ever said they were sorry for the children's slayings.

On Monday, Ortega appeared visibly shaken as she apologised even though covering the courtroom.

Kevin Krim said his family introduced "Lulu and Leo's law", which will make it a crime to falsify job applications and references for someone working in childcare, to NY state legislature in "direct response" to the case.

"Five years ago Yoselyn Ortega stole Leo and Lulu Krim from their parents, their siblings, and our Manhattan community", he said.

The children's parents, Kevin Krim, 42, and Marina Krim, issued statements thanking the judge and jurors and the district attorney's office. "She has never shed a tear for the children", he said.

"It is so unfair that they are gone", the father said.

Market for legal sports betting could be more than $57B
Broadcast attorney John Garziglia tells Radio Ink he believes this could lead to another advertising category for radio. As ESPN reports , the ruling opens the door to legal sports betting in any state that wishes to offer it.

When Marina opened the bathroom door, Ortega, who had slit her wrists earlier, stuck a knife into her own throat.

The former CNBC executive said he was trying to figure it out and "fumbling around" when a flight attendant asked him to go to the cockpit.

"Nessie will never know what her sister and brother are like".

Ortega's plea of insanity had been rejected by Judge Gregory Carro, who during the sentencing hearing described the case as "pure evil". She returned to the lobby and asked the doorman if he had seen her children leave.

They testified that Ms. Ortega, a religious woman, had suffered from bouts of deep depression, and delusions and hallucinations since she was 16 in the Dominican Republic, but her illness had not been treated or diagnosed until after her arrest on murder charges.

At Ortega's trial, Kevin Krim testified that when his plane landed in NY that night in October 2012, he was met by police, who escorted him to the hospital where the bodies of his dead children had been brought, along with his wife and surviving child.

As the verdicts were read, Kevin Krim broke down in tears.

Prosecutors say Ortega knew what she was doing and understood "every stab, every slash" as she slaughtered the children.

Mr Krim, who now works at a start-up, and his wife use a Facebook page to post updates on their lives. Ortega, a United States citizen originally from the Dominican Republic, had stabbed Lulu 30 times.

The couple started the Lulu and Leo Fund, which aims to support innovative art programs for children.
