San Antonio pastor travels to Jerusalem for Embassy opening

Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress to give prayer at US Embassy opening in Jerusalem

Smith didn't criticize the Trump administration's decision to include Jeffress as part of the delegation sent to Jerusalem for the opening of the U.S. Embassy in that city.

The Rev. Robert Jeffress, pastor of the First Baptist megachurch in Dallas and a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, told Fox News on Friday that he's delivering an opening prayer of dedication at the ceremony.

Jeffress has a history of attacking Mitt Romney.

"Robert Jeffress says 'you can't be saved by being a Jew, ' and 'Mormonism is a heresy from the pit of hell, '" he tweeted.

Pastor Robert Jeffress appeared on Fox News after facing criticism for his participation in the ceremony commemorating the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem.

Jeffress responded with the tweet: "Historic Christianity has taught for 2,000 years that salvation is through faith in Christ alone. The truth that I, together with tens of hundreds of thousands of evangelical Christians all over the world, proceed to espouse that perception, is neither bigoted nor newsworthy". The country's founding 1948 document made no mention of God.

Comfort said in a statement Romney is "sadly mistaken".

In the past few years he implied that secular women behave like animals due to their immodest dress and claimed 2016 that according to Jewish law, non-Jews were forbidden from living in Israel.

After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in August 2005, killing more than 1,200 people, Hagee said the storm was God's punishment for its sinful ways, a common trope among conservative evangelists. "Islam is a false religion and if you follow the tenants of it, you will end up in hell when you die", he said.

"Christianity is not bigotry".

The Open House for Pride and Tolerance, a Jerusalem-based LGBT activist organization, also joined in the criticism, saying pastor Jeffress had earlier billed homosexual rights promoters as "pedophilia activists", and gays as "perverts".

Speaking with The Christian Post in 2011 about the controversy he had garnered from calling Mormonism a "cult", Jeffress said that what people find offensive is the notion that not everyone is going to Heaven. "I really hope people will look at the book and see what their tax dollars are supporting".

Jeffress said in a February 6, 2017, video posted on his church's website that "the truth everyone headed to hell has rejected is that Jesus Christ is the only means by which a person may be saved".

Jeffress said the president "stands on the right side of you, God, when it comes to Israel".

But critics say the move, which broke from nearly seven decades of U.S. policy, could risk peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, who both claim Jerusalem as their capital.
