Why Gina Haspel shouldn't lead the Central Intelligence Agency

Dick Cheney fox business

An aide for the Senate Intelligence Committee said the panel will vote on Gina Haspel's nomination on Wednesday.

In her confirmation hearing, Haspel said most of the right things.

Another Democrat, Sen. Joe DonnellyJoseph (Joe) Simon DonnellyCheney: "Please, please, pretty please" doesn't work with terrorists Gates: Haspel's ties to enhanced interrogation don't disqualify her from leading CIA Sanders on opposition to Haspel but not Brennan: "It's not just the issue of torture" MORE (Ind.), announced his support for Haspel over the weekend. Haspel was assured of a favorable vote from the committee, which has an 8-7 Republican majority, when Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced they would support her nomination. Referring to Haspel's role in overseeing torture and then ordering the shredding of videotapes of torture sessions, Donnelly said, "I believe that she has learned from the past and that the Central Intelligence Agency under her leadership can help our country confront serious global threats and challenges".

Joe Donnelly of IN said IN a statement Saturday that he made his decision after "a tough, frank and extensive discussion" with Gina Haspel, the spy agency's acting director.

With the Republican Party holding only a 51-49 margin in the Senate, cut to 50-49 in practice because of McCain's long absence due to terminal brain cancer, the shift of even one senator had the potential to torpedo the nomination.

'Mother of Satan' explosives used in Surabaya church bombings
President Joko Widodo strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in East Java, saying they were "beyond humanity measures". There was no immediate claim of responsibility after the latest suicide bombing .

The torture program was illegal at the time based on global treaties the U.S.is a signatory to, including the Convention Against Torture and Geneva Convention, but no one has ever been held accountable.

While Haspel told Senators Wednesday that she would not reinstate the brutal torture program she helped implement, the 61-year-old appeared to have failed to provide a definitive answer as to the effectiveness of the program. "I'd have them active and ready to go".

Much as he did before Pompeo's eventual confirmation, Paul has been digging in ahead of the floor vote on Haspel.

She had her testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee last week, which was widely seen as a positive performance.
