'Yanny' or 'Laurel' sound clip debate splits the Internet

That was the question Wednesday as a short audio clip sparked a social media debate about whether the word being heard is "yanny" or "laurel".

If you have the ability to tweak your sound output to emphasize both the higher and then the lower range, you will probably hear both as well-or at least, understand why people are divided on this.

One thing that everyone can agree on is that this is the most hotly-contested meme since "The Dress", where people were split on whether it was a gold or blue hue.

If you heard "Laurel", you are the victor and have earned bragging rights for this round of internet debate.

Is it "Yanny" or is it "Laurel"? More people can hear a strong bass sound than a strong treble sound.

On Tuesday, the internet broke out into an all-consuming debate, dividing people into two camps: those that heard "Laurel", and those that heard "Yanny". The sound card in your device could emphasize higher or lower frequencies, which would explain why some people heard both on different devices.

The debate began on Reddit and expanded throughout social media.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ get Burgundy Red and Sunrise Gold colors
A new benchmark listing nearly confirms a device named Samsung SM-J260G based on the toned-down operating system. The Galaxy S9 sports a single camera on the back, while the Galaxy S9 Plus features two cameras back there.

The words follow a similar pathway.

'The two words are phonetically similar enough for this to work however, your brain can't handle both at once, so it picks one and that is the version you hear, ' they continued.

You can listen to how it sounds originally here, and if you're a yanny-truther out there, I offer up my sincerest apologies. Perhaps Dawkins really heard "laurel" in the recording. He adds that hearing is passive whereas listening is when people try to interpret what they have heard. Then I plugged in my in-ear monitor, a custom headphone that a lot of musicians use, and I heard Laurel.

Evidently, there is a higher-pitched "yeh"-like sound hidden somewhere near the beginning of the word laurel (at least in this viral recording), along with an "ee"-like sound near the end - but these higher-pitched sounds are not readily audible for everyone".

"I can't hear laurel to save my life", the audiologist said.

Either way, it's likely you very strongly believe in what you hear.
