City prepares for annual Memorial Day Parade

Memorial Day services announced for the area

Here in Queens, where unabashed patriotism is a hallmark of many neighborhoods, more than a half-dozen Memorial Day parades and other ceremonies are scheduled for this coming weekend.

Monday - The American Legion Essman-Schroeder Post No. 20 of Waterford announces these Memorial Day services: North Cape Cemetery, 8 a.m.; Norway Cemetery, 8:20 a.m.; St. Peter Cemetery, 8:40 a.m.; Waterford bridge ceremony, 9:30 a.m.; St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, 9:45 a.m.; Oakwood Cemetery, 10:15 a.m.; Caldwell Cemetery, 10:30 a.m.; Honey Creek bridge ceremony, 11 a.m.; Honey Creek Cemetery, 11:10 a.m.; Rochester Cemetery, 11:30 a.m.; English Settlement Cemetery, 12:40 p.m.; Rosewood Cemetery, 12:55 p.m.; Rochester Parade, 1:30 p.m.; and Rochester Park program, 2 p.m.

Memorial Day service will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, at Taylorsville Cemetery with the Starmont High School Band performing.

Monday, 11 a.m. - Ely Community Memorial Day Service at Rogers Grove Cemetery on Ivanhoe Road.

The various Pamlico Veterans Council members - American Legion Post 200, American Legion Post 238, DAV 93 and the Marine Corps League Oriental Dragon Detachment 1413 - will all take part and lay a wreath at the monument on Courthouse Square.

At 4 p.m., the annual Good Ole Days celebration will be held in the pavilion.

The parade begins at Ohio Avenue and West Beech Street at 10 a.m. and ends at the reviewing stand on Park Avenue in front of City Hall.

The parade will include Kent County veterans and marching bands playing military-themed songs.

Featured in this year's ceremony will be a color guard and ceremonial rifle detail, the Havelock Community Band, Sam Lewis singing the national anthem, and the Rev. Rick Moser delivering the invocation and benediction.

The ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial Garden, located on Veterans Memorial Drive SW on May 28 at 7 p.m. In case of rain the parade will be cancelled and the ceremony will be held at the school in Walsh Common.

Additionally, the Cpl. Christopher Nelson American Legion Post and Auxiliary of Rochester will hold an honorary service at the Ground Mound Cemetery in South Thurston County at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day.

Keewatin American Legion Post 452, VFW Post 5516 and Auxiliaries will host a ceremony at 9:30 a.m.at Keewatin City Park. The memorial lists 1,559 names.

Following the parade, a series of speeches were given at Memorial Green, near present-day Methodist Lane and the North End Cemetery. Information about the WWII-era Military Intelligence Service Language School, cannon firings, depiction of an army hospital, more. The parade will travel down Main Street.

ARLINGTON - American Legion Post 219 of Arlington will host Major Jesse Nus Gossett as guest speaker for the Memorial Day service.

The grand marshals are Sgt. Lawrence Gallmon, an Air Force veteran, and former Community Board 13 chairman Bryan Block. The parade will proceed to the Vermont Veterans' Home, where ceremonies will be held.

Latrobe: There will be a Mass at 9 a.m.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have lost their lives in service of our country. Legion Commander Bill Nash will open the ceremony, and Col. Charles Kohler, Carroll County Commissioner Richard Weaver, Mayor Christopher Nevin and state Sen. The collection has many index materials regarding burials in East Hampton cemeteries, and the staff would be happy to assist in every effort to honor the sacrifices of family and friends.
