1st named storm of 2018 Atlantic hurricane season expected to impact Carolinas

Tropical depression formation expected Saturday

Hurricane season doesn't officially begin until June 1, but Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed, making it this year's the first named tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Subtropical Storm Alberto formed on Friday morning just east of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, and it's expected to strengthen as it spins north across the Gulf of Mexico this weekend.

Invest 90L is an area of disturbed weather near Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula Wednesday night, but there's a high chance (70%) that it becomes either a tropical or subtropical depression over the Gulf of Mexico within the next five days.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday afternoon that the tropical storm watch has been issued from Indian Pass, Florida, westward to Grand Isle, Louisiana along a swath that also includes parts of Alabama and Mississippi.

"Expect some risky conditions along the beach", Wynn said.

A high rip current risk means the water will be risky for all levels of swimmers.

Red flags warning of risky surf conditions are already flying along some beaches. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the United States watch area beginning on Sunday.

Alberto forms in the Gulf, flooding rains forecast

"It will hit you pretty hard. and it sucks you right back out". "It's unlikely that a system this early, and with the conditions that it's going to be encountering, will become very strong", Wool said.

The 1 p.m. update on Subtropical Storm Alberto from the National Hurricane Center says the story is still almost stationary. When it arrives, forecast models suggest it will spin up into at least a tropical depression and maybe even the hurricane season's first named tropical storm.

"Its mostly looking like a heavy rain event", National Weather Service meteorologist John McMichael said.

These rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. "The ground is already saturated, so more rain will only cause more".

There's a 60 percent chance of rain on Saturday and 80 percent chance on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. It's not until mid-week that the rain chance dips to 40 percent, which is more typical for South Florida's rainy season.

"The flood risk is not expected to end with Memorial Day".
