Troopers make record breaking fentanyl bust in Nebraska

About 24 hours ago, Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts announced a recent fentanyl bust of almost 120 pounds - the largest drug bust in the state of Nebraska as well as one of the biggest drug busts all across the United States.

Troopers found the drugs after seeing a tractor-trailer driving on the shoulder of the interstate last month.

Like heroin and other opioids, fentanyl causes drowsiness, nausea and confusion, and overdoses can result in respiratory failure and death.

The seizure marked the largest fentanyl bust in the history of Nebraska, Nebraska State Patrol said on Twitter.

Fentanyl has received increased attention in recent years as a contributor to the country's opioid crisis, which kills an average of 115 Americans each day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Just two milligrams of the drug, equivalent to only a couple of grains of salt, is enough to kill a person, and even exposure to the opioid is extremely risky and potentially lethal. The trooper followed the truck with emergency lights for two miles before the truck finally pulled over.

Troopers searched the vehicle and discovered a false compartment located in the empty trailer.

I trust in the vehicle so I can play around but I am sliding a bit too much so I think there is something we can do better. But if you ask the question 'Would I rather drive with Kimi than another driver?' then the answer is yes".

Ricketts points out troopers didn't just seize almost a ton of marijuana in one traffic stop, but also seized more than 100 pounds of fentanyl in another bust.

Matthew Barden of the Drug Enforcement Administration said that since October various law enforcement agencies in the state have taken 275 to 300 pounds of fentanyl off the streets. The Nebraska State Patrol says the compartment contained 42 packages wrapped in foil.

The driver, Felipe Genao-Minaya, and passenger Nelson Nunez were arrested.

Nebraska authorities seized 118 kilos of fentanyl - a extremely addictive opiate - throughout a routine truck cease final month.

The 118 pounds seized during the bust could kill about 26 million people, according to estimates by the DEA.

The Washington Post reports both individuals are being held in lieu of $100,000 bond at the Buffalo County Jail and have a June 20 court appearance scheduled. Already, the agency says it's seized nearly as much - 934 pounds - in just the first six months of the 2018 fiscal year.
