Alberto makes landfall while local forecast becomes hotter/drier

A flood watch is expected for South Florida on Saturday morning as a result of Subtropical Storm Alberto

The subtropical storm made landfall in Florida on Monday afternoon, and saw strong winds creating a mini-waterspout in a hotel swimming pool in Panama City Beach.

As of Tuesday, just three days before the official start of hurricane season, no other storms were brewing in the Gulf or the Atlantic maps from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed.

Heavy rain has already fallen in southern states, and flood and flash-flood watches span the region, reaching as far north as North Carolina and Tennessee, the National Weather Service said.

Subtropical Storm Alberto continued its slow approach to the Emerald Coast on Monday for a possible landfall in the afternoon or evening, weather forecasters said. Locally heavy rain can be expected throughout Memorial Day.

At its height, Alberto, the first storm of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, blasted sustained winds of 65 miles per hour (105 kph) with gusts that packed full hurricane punches of 75 miles per hour (121 kph), said meteorologist David Roth of the National Weather Service.

As it turns out, an intended franchise with the title Solo may have to be just that-a solo , one-and-done affair. To right the ship on Episode 9, Lucasfilm has turned to an old friend: " The Force Awakens " director J.J.

As Alberto moved inland, deprived of the warm waters that fuel tropical weather systems, the storm was expected to steadily weaken.

Several states, including Florida, Alabama, and MS went into pre-emptive states of emergency on Sunday, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the northern Gulf Coast from the Suwannee River to the Alabama-Florida border.

Alberto had picked up strength as it headed north through the Gulf of Mexico, bringing with it the warning of life-threatening inundation, said the Miami-based NHC. Isolated and weak tornadoes are also possible.

The storm also forced some Memorial Day tributes to be cancelled across Florida's Panhandle.

Mississippi, Florida and Alabama have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm's arrival. What had sprung up from the Gulf of Mexico as a subtropical storm was now a vast, soggy system trekking inland as it flung rain - heavy at times - all around the USA southeast. This could cause flooding and flash flooding, it stated. Warnings about storm surges and high surf were aired along the coast on either side of Apalachicola on Monday. One to four hurricanes could be "major" with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour (178 kph).(backslash)(backslash) If that forecast holds, it would make for a near-normal or above-normal season. The season is likely to be "near or above normal", according to the NHC. The way it looks now the remnants of Alberto will produce quite a few clouds, lots of humidity and more numerous showers and storms on Friday with some tropical downpours that MAY lead to some localized flooding.
