New Zealand to launch biggest culling of cows in history

The disease has now been traced to the Southland farm of Alfons Zeestraten at least back to December 2015. MPI says

In an attempt to eradicate a disease-causing bacteria from cows, politicians and industry heads in New Zealand agreed on Monday to kill some 150,000 of the creatures. The cost of attempting to eradicate this bacterial infection, which only affects cattle, is also staggering with the estimate now $886 million.

The Government would meet 68% of that cost and DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand would meet 32%.

Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor said it was believed the outbreak came from one source and that expert advice indicated it was possible to contain and eradicate it.

So far, 38 farms have been affected by the cow disease.

Mycoplasma bovis can cause such ailments as mastitis, pneumonia, and arthritis. The bacteria is not a threat to humans, but can cause production delays on farms. "But the alternative is the spread of the disease across our national herd".

Murray Jagger, and his wife Helen run a 650-dairy cow and 250 dairy/beef enterprise at the Whangarei Heads. Eradicating Mycoplasma bovis won't be easy, but if we don't try now, we will never get another chance.

It has been made clear by the officials that all the cows belonging to an infected farm will be killed even if they are healthy.

According to the Ministry for Primary Industries, so far some 26,000 cows have been culled and it estimates another 126,000 cattle will need to be slaughtered as phased eradication will involve killing all cattle on all infected properties along with cattle on most restricted properties.

White House comes out fighting on Roseanne racism row
Jarrett also said that Iger had called her before the announcement that " Roseanne " was canceled, and that Iger " apologized ". On Wednesday, she said on Twitter she did not know Jarrett was black. "I am disappointed in her actions to say the least".

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she did not want to end up in a situation where she looked back and said "I could have tried harder".

"And we have to support them as neighbours, community members, farmers, friends". Milk products represent the country's largest single export, and much of it is sold to China and used in infant formula.

Currently, the disease is classified as "active" on 37 properties in the country.

Farmer Chris Ford says he was very disappointed in the Government's decision.

Cabinet's decision has the support of Federated Farmers and the NZ Veterinary Association, although the former is well aware of the emotional and psychological effect on farmers.

Importantly, the government promises to improve the compensation claim process. Of this, $698 million is the loss of production borne by farmers and $520 million of response costs.

The estimated cost of not acting was $1.3 billion over 10 years.
