Puerto Rico Hurricane Death Toll Over 70X Greater Than Official Count

The group estimates that 4,645 people died between September 20 and December 31, 2017 as a direct or indirect result of the Category 4 storm, and one-third perished because of delayed or interrupted medical care.

Indeed, 31% of households surveyed reported "disruptions to medical services" after the hurricane hit. Researchers at Penn State University as well as a team at the Center for Investigative Journalism in Puerto Rico counted death certificates, all producing figures that towered above the official government toll.

Most respondents cited an inability to get medicine and the inability to use respiratory and other equipment that relies on electricity as threats to health.

The island continues to recover, but efforts have been delayed by its problematic power grid, and electricity has not been restored to all of the island almost nine months after the storm.

While valuable in exposing the absurd official government count, these previous studies were extremely limited in the type of data they were able to collect.

The result agrees with other independent estimates that indicated the death toll was closer to 1,000.

"Quantifying the effect of natural disasters on society is critical for recovery of public health services and infrastructure", the report said. Hospitals and doctors struggled to provide care, and many people simply had trouble getting to the doctor or the hospital to seek medical care.

Twelve years after the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina evinced little interest in the future of a predominantly African-American city, the Trump White House couldn't be bothered to care about coming to the aid of American citizens who happen to speak Spanish. "We had a protocol that really was subpar and we recognize it".

In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the number of people who died in Puerto Rico was much higher than the official death count of 64.

The Puerto Rico government said it "always expected the number to be higher than what was previously reported". Researchers wrote that they hope US officials will use the data to better determine the scale and severity of disasters and prepare for recovery.
