North Korea: Trump says summit with Kim is back on

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

"I told them, 'I think that you're going to have, probably, others.' Hey, wouldn't it be wonderful if we walked out and everything was settled all of a sudden from sitting down for a couple of hours?"

After North Korean officials delivered a series of bellicose statements last month, Trump announced he was withdrawing from the summit with a strongly worded letter. "I think it'll be a process".

Wall Street took word from Trump that the summit was back on in stride.

"Obviously, the eyes of the world, the hopes of the world are on these talks", he said.

But the president downplayed expectations for a quick deal on Pyongyang giving up its nuclear weapons, saying such an agreement won't be signed in Singapore, and the meeting will serve as the start of a process.

A North Korean delegation visited the White House on Friday to hand deliver a letter to President Trump.

Mr. Trump told reporters after the meeting that it was a "very nice letter", minutes later clarifying that he hadn't opened it yet and could be in for a "surprise".

Still, he refused to say whether the North agreed to the United States demand for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

He also said that North Korea "wanted to do denuclearisation", although the North did not confirm this.

Additionally, e-mails showed the project was initially worth $15 million, but the budget could grow to be as high as $250 million. It was officially launched a year ago by the US Department of Defense Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team.

Trump said they had discussed formally ending the Korean War, which has been largely frozen since an armistice ended hostilities, but not the underlying conflict, in 1953.

"I think you're going to have a very positive result in the end", the president.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming summit.

North Korea, whose nuclear ambitions have been a source of tension for decades, has made advances in missile technology in recent years but Trump has sworn not to allow it to develop nuclear missiles that could hit the United States. Despite Kim's apparent eagerness for a summit with Trump, there are lingering doubts about whether he will fully relinquish his nuclear weapons, which he may see as his only guarantee of survival.

Since then, preparations for the meeting kicked into high gear, with delegations from Washington and Pyongyang holding meetings in the demilitarized zone in North Korea and in NY. Referring to the Lavrov meeting, Trump said he "didn't like it". However, he left things scrambling, when he abruptly cancelled the summit on Thursday as he stated he would not tolerate the "tremendous anger and open hostility" from North Korea. "And frankly, I said, 'Take your time". In 2015, Austria helped pay for "security and logistical support" for Iranian leader during talks that led to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Obama approved the global Iran nuclear deal by signing off on it as an executive agreement rather than a treaty.

President Trump's latest announcement came after an Oval Office conversation with North Korea's former spy chief Kim Yong Chol. He is vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee.

The pair posed for a photograph in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, with Trump grinning broadly.
