Simona Halep & Maria Sharapova into round three

Simona Halep French Open 2018

World number one Simona Halep survived a scare to reach the second round of the French Open.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC is through to the third round after beating Jaume Munar 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4.

- Romanian top seed and world number one Halep is a two-time runner-up at Roland Garros - losing to Maria Sharapova in 2014 final and giving up a set and 3-0 lead to lose to Jelena Ostapenko 12 months ago.

In Halep's match, she quickly reasserted her authority though with the depth and power of her groundstrokes stopping Riske in her tracks - conceding just 14 points in sets 2 and 3. Halep has won nine of her last 11 matches on clay court.

"It was a tough match as her left-handed topspin is hard to handle", Halep said about an opponent who once used to be a right-hander but switched over to being a lefty.

At least he got through in straight sets, saving energy for whatever might come next at Roland Garros.

"I think the nerves are really good".

Wozniacki won her first grand slam trophy at the Australian Open this year and can return to the No 1 ranking held by Halep by winning the title in Paris.

The American, who has never won a Grand Slam match outside Roland Garros, dropped her serve again to trail 5-1 and Halep swiftly put her out of her misery by needing only one match point to book a third-round meeting with Andrea Petkovic. She knows getting carried away would be a big mistake.

Ukraine's fourth seed Elina Svitolina reached the third round with a 6-3 6-4 win over Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova.

In the seven tournaments he had played before arriving in Paris, he has been beaten in the first round three times and has yet to reach a final. Meanwhile, in a late-evening first round men's doubles match on Wednesday, the Indian combine of Yuki Bhambri and Divij Sharan pulled past Frenchman Fabrice Martin and India's Purav Raja in 2 hours and 21 minutes.

The Spaniard sealed the match with a whipped cross-court forehand, though for much of the match the number three seed struggled to find her rhythm and range on the forehand. "I just played enough in the right moments to win the match", admitted 20th seed Djokovic, who is still trying to rediscover his golden touch since undergoing elbow surgery this year.
