Barcelona lock up Samuel Umtiti with new five-year contract

Man Utd transfer news

The transfer speculation surrounding Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti seemingly came to an end on Sunday, as the Catalans officially announced he is set to sign a new contract with the club.

Les Bleus beat Italy 3-1 on Friday evening, with Umtiti opening the scoring, and are still to play the United States before making their journey to Russian Federation.

But in the face of transfer speculation the France worldwide has opted to commit himself to the Blaugrana until 2023.

The announcement of Umtiti's new deal with Barcelona will no doubt have been a blow for fans of Manchester United, who had been linked with the defender to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Trump confirms June 12 meeting with Kim in Singapore
Since taking power in 2011, Kim has not publicly met with another head of state in North Korea. The June 12 meeting could be just the beginning of more talks, Trump reportedly said.

Umtiti joined Barcelona in 2016 after a productive spell with Lyon, and he established himself as one of the world's best defenders in the first half of this season.

With Umtiti in the side, Barcelona have lost just once in 48 games, winning 83% of the time, a figure that drops to 57% whenever he hasn't featured.

Umtiti will formally sign the five-year deal on Monday, before Barca hold a news conference. That his release clause has reportedly been bumped up to €500 million will also come as a huge relief to everyone associated with the club, effectively ending the chances of any suitor to snap him up.

Umtiti is now on worldwide duty with France as they prepare for the 2018 World Cup. As far as Manchester United are concerned, they will now have to turn their attention elsewhere, with the player committed to Barcelona.
