Is Microsoft acquiring GitHub?

GitHub has been an independent company for its entire 10-year history, but that might not be the case for much longer.

Many corporations, including Microsoft and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, use GitHub to store their corporate code and to collaborate. The deal could be announced as early as Monday, Bloomberg reported. Founded in 2008, GitHub hosts 27 million software developers working on 80 million repositories of code.

GitHub, valued at $2 billion as of a 2015 funding round, is a popular code repository hosting service used by many developers and big companies including Facebook, Airbnb, SAP, IBM, and many others. As Nadella increasingly moves the company away from complete dependence on the Windows operating system to more in-house development on Linux, the company needs new ways to connect with the broader developer community. The company aggressively recruited a series of open-source developers and developer advocates to join its ranks a year ago.

Trump jobs tweet shatters decades of protocol, jolts markets
Last year, members of the Trump administration drew criticism for commenting on the numbers too quickly after their release. The jobs report also showed wage gains - mediocre for years - exceeded estimates, rising 2.7 per cent from a year earlier.

This is likely to be one of the top questions facing Microsoft and GitHub when the deal is formally announced. Business Insider, citing sources, reports that Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy GitHub.

The acquisition comes after nine months of uncertainty for GitHub, seeing that it hasn't been able to find a new CEO in that time. Having Microsoft buy it would mean a huge cash injection for GitHub (there's a suggested price of $5 billion), and an acquisition would give Microsoft access to a wealth of data and a huge number of developers - something of a win for both sides. This would make it one of the company's largest all-time acquisitions.
