Volcano eruption in Central America kills six

Guatemala Fuego volcano

A towering cloud of smoke from Volcan de Fuego, Spanish for "volcano of fire", 44 kilometres from Guatemala City has also blanketed nearby villages in heavy ash.

A vehicle is partially covered with ash after Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted violently, in Guatemala City, Guatemala June 3, 2018.

The Volcán de Fuego has spewed a stream of lava into a nearby village and sent a column of smoke and ash into the sky.

The charred bodies of victims laid on the steaming, ashen remnants of a pyroclastic flow as rescuers attended to badly injured victims.

He said on radio a river of lava has overwhelmed a village.

Mr Cabañas later said the dead included a member of his agency's staff.

Cabanas said one of those killed was a CONRED employee.

People have been evacuated from several areas and the capital's La Aurora airport has closed.

However, Washington claims such operations are meant to protect " freedom of navigation " in the sea. According to Beijing, the operation "seriously violated China's sovereignty".

Ash was falling on the Guatemala City area as well as the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, which are in south-central Guatemala around the volcano.

Dozens of videos were popping up on social media and local TV, depicting the extent of devastation.

Cabanas says four people died when lava set a house on fire and two children were burned to death while standing on a bridge watching the eruption.

A woman who was covered in ash told the Diario de Centroamerica that lava had poured through corn fields.

President Jimmy Morales said a national emergency response was under way. Streets and houses were covered in the colonial town of Antigua, a popular tourist destination.

Workers and guests were evacuated from the La Reunion golf club near Antigua.

Around four hours after the explosion lava flows reaching temperatures of about 1,300degrees Fahrenheit, cascaded down the mountain, according to ABC.
