'Star Wars' actress Kelly Marie Tran quits social media after harassment

Kelly Marie Tran

Despite high-placed supporters like JJ Abrams stepping in to denounce fans who feel "threatened by women", and Luke Skywalker himself praising her directly, Tran still has trouble shaking angry nerds who insist her character, Rose Tico, was the worst part of The Last Jedi.

As of Tuesday, Tran's Instagram page was still visible, with the bio line "Afraid, but doing it anyway", but there were no posts.

Tran's galaxy far, far away debut-playing Resistance mechanic Rose Tico in Episode VIII- marked the first time an Asian-American woman appeared in a lead role in a Star Wars movie. Although Tran's performance and character were widely praised, a number of so-called Star Wars fans have unleashed a torrent of racist and sexist attacks on Tran ever since the movie hit theaters in December.

Apparently even now, half a year later, Tran's trolls have not crawled back into their dank caves, which is why she reportedly just deleted all of her posts from Instagram after months of ongoing harassment.

He then added: 'On social media a few unhealthy people can cast a big shadow on the wall, but over the past 4 years I've met lots of real fellow SW fans. Whatever the reason for not liking the character, though, the fact that many of these people have taken their anger out on Kelly Marie Tran by persistently harassing her on her personal social media account is truly callous. "We like and dislike stuff but we do it with humor, love, and respect".

"Guys, can I tell you a secret?"

'I was terrified of being picked apart, of being scrutinized, of being seen. I avoided social media for a long time purely because I was afraid.

The UCLA grad followed the lead of her castmate Daisy Ridley, who deleted the popular platform in July of a year ago because she wasn't 'equipped'.

"I posted a thing about gun regulations, because I was at an event in tribute to the Orlando shooting at Pulse", Ridley later explained during an interview with Glamour.

'People weren't nice about how I looked. That is not what I signed up for. If I want to talk about gun safety, I will talk about gun safety.
