Amazon to broadcast 20 Premier League matches per season

Twitter

In Britain, Amazon will share the broadcast rights to the Premier League with two British heavyweights - Sky Sports and BT Sport.

In February, Sky and BT were between them awarded five of the seven packages in for 2019/20-2021/22 at a total bidding price of £4.464 billion.

It has now been confirmed that the United States company has bought one of those packages, with BT taking the other.

The games will only be available to their Amazon Prime UK subscribers, which is the online seller's premium service available for a fee.

By most accounts, Premier League football is the most popular spectator sport in the world.

Amazon's Jay Marine said Prime members in Britain would be able to watch every team and every game in the two rounds of fixtures, "so no matter which Premier League team you support, you're guaranteed to see them play live on Prime Video".

Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore said: "Amazon is an exciting new partner for the Premier League and we are very pleased they have chosen to invest in these rights".

Amazon will show 20 Premier League matches a season for three years from 2019, after winning one of the final two broadcast packages.

The Premier League have also released details of the rights deals for the Republic of Ireland.

Supreme Court refuses to stay release of Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Kaala’
The controversies surrounding Rajinikanth's Kaala and whether it will release in Karnataka or not has hyped up the film. We don't want to interfere with its release, the apex court said while refusing to stay the release of the movie.

The soccer deal extends Amazon's lineup of streaming sports events, which includes professional tennis matches and football games.

The other package of 20 games was bought by BT for £90 million ($121 million), although it is not yet clear how much Amazon had to pay to secure streaming rights for the somewhat similar package it acquired.

A fraught divide between the clubs in recent years had centred on leading clubs demanding a greater share of the global revenue stream.

On a busy day of announcements at the Premier League's summer meeting, it was also confirmed that the "big six" clubs have won their fight to take a bigger share of the top tier's booming global broadcasting revenue.

BT TV customers can access all of the action on BT Sport from just £6 a month.

The breakdown of that is that Sky Sports Entertainment with Sky Sports Premier League added costs £38 a month, plus a one-off cost of £20.

But the format of the Premier League's auction makes it easier for digital media companies to compete.

The EPL gave no details of the scheduling, but the BBC reported Amazon will exclusively livestream all 10 matches over a bank holiday period and another 10 during the first midweek fixture programme in December.
