NASA's Curiosity rover discovers organic matter on Mars

What has Nasa found on Mars? Alien life? Watch announcement livestream here

The best evidence that life once existed on Mars has been revealed in 3-billion-year old organic matter in rocks and cyclical emissions of methane from the planet's surface, NASA scientists disclosed on Thursday in a press conference explaining recent discoveries by the Curiosity rover.

"Curiosity has shown that Gale crater was habitable around 3.5 billion years ago, with conditions comparable to those on the early Earth, where life evolved around that time", she wrote. One of NASA's aims with the Curiosity Rover is to search for signs of ancient life on the red planet.

On top of that, after keeping close tabs on methane levels in the Martian atmosphere, scientists have finally confirmed something weird is definitely going on, and they think they know what's causing it. The space agency says that water-rock chemistry might have led to the creation of this methane, but it can't rule out the "possibility of biological origins".

Key details about the organics may have been obscured in Curiosity's sample because the rover can only drill two inches into rock.

That may be because numerous compounds, such as thiophene, methanethiol and dimethyl sulfide, had sulfur atoms in their molecular structure - which would strengthen the relatively fragile organic molecules, allowing them to survive the radiation bombarding the planet's surface for so long.

Scientists agree more powerful spacecraft - and, ideally, rocks returned to Earth from Mars - are needed to prove whether tiny organisms like bacteria ever existed on the red planet.

Furthermore, Pontefract says, ExoMars and NASA's Mars 2020 mission will use tools that take a different approach to analyze organics. Over the intervening years, fluid flowing thought it would have initiated chemical reactions that could have destroyed the organic matter - the material discovered may in fact be fragments from bigger molecules. Methane is another organic molecule.

"We don't know if that methane is ancient, we don't know if it's modern - it could be either", Webster said. It could be. Organic molecules are the building blocks of all known forms of life.

For ten days in May, Facebook's status-update tool did not retain user-specified privacy settings , resorting to the default instead.

It's impossible to say whether ancient life explains the Martian organics, however.

This does not mean life was discovered on Mars... yet. In this case, Curiosity found molecules with names like "thiophene" (C4H4S) and "dimethylsulfide" (C2H6S) that aren't all that rare in the solar system.

The most exciting news is that the changes definitely match the Martian seasons, hitting a peak at the end of summer in the northern hemisphere.

The Curiosity rover recently started drilling into the surface of Mars again after a almost two-year break due to a mechanical issue. However, the abundances of methane measured are greater than models predict should occur, meaning we still don't know exactly how they are produced.

Questions remain, however, as to how the organic material was formed. "While we don't know the source of the material, the wonderful consistency of the results makes me think we have a slam-dunk signal for organics on Mars", Eigenbrode said.

"Today, we're announcing the discovery of a repeatable, identifiable, seasonal pattern in the methane measurements", said Chris Webster, a senior research fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Hell comes from Mars, NASA, and it's only been two years since we cleaned up the last incident of Mars Hell. "So way under the ground this methane is trapped".
