Trump takes more shots at Trudeau via Twitter

Trade Tensions With Canada Rise Ahead of G-7

Trudeau and Macron expressed strong support for those institutions Thursday.

But there were global politics at play, too.

Trudeau will be getting help from his fellow G7 leaders.

Trump, citing national security concerns, has slapped stiff tariffs on Canada and the European Union, prompting retaliatory levies and setting off a trade war that leaders say ultimately will hurt businesses, workers and consumers around the globe.

Canada's Trudeau also slammed the tariffs after they were announced, calling them "totally unacceptable".

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (right) shakes hands with French President Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Trudeau's office on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, on June 6. "But I'm not President Trump so I can't make decisions for him".

The Canadian leader is embroiled in a row with Washington over negotiations to revamp the nearly 25-year-old the North American Free Trade Agreement, as well as over the steel and aluminum tariffs.

World leaders gather today in Quebec for a G7 meeting that has been overshadowed by the United States decision to impose steel tariffs on allies.

"Until we can have reciprocal relationships, we will not have free trade, and we will not have fair trade", Kudlow said. He re-imposed sanctions against companies doing business with Iran.

Many locals say people in the region, where several generations of families have worked in aluminum production, are anxious the uncertainty caused by the tariffs could eventually lead to job losses - on both sides of the border.

"It's worrying. It's the work for young people today".

LeBron says National Basketball Association champ won't be going to White House
Facing Golden State in the NBA Finals has been James' burden the past four seasons, and he has one championship to show for it. That doesn't mean they can't be beat, it just means it's really tough to beat them. "We need to find ways to get him shots".

"The six other countries of the G7 represent a market which is bigger than the American market", the French president said.

"These are good, well-paying jobs - so, for sure, it keeps the whole economy rolling", Belanger said of the local aluminum industry.

Canada countered by announcing it would slap an estimated $16.6 billion in duties on some steel and aluminum products and other goods from the USA, including maple syrup, beer kegs, whisky and toilet paper.

But since coming to office in January 2017, Trump has pulled the USA out of the Paris climate accord, the Iran nuclear deal and the TPP Pacific free trade deal. "This is the game". Canada, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Italy (six of the G-7) are in accord in pushing back strongly against Trump's aluminum and steel tariffs, though concerted retaliation if necessary. "I think we've done everything we can and put everything on the line", he said.

"Maybe the American president doesn't mind being isolated today", he said, but added that U.S. workers would be the first to suffer from a trade war between Europe and the US. The United States trade representative office told the Washington Post that the USA actually has a trade surplus with Canada.

The US president also has frosty relations with Trudeau, the summit host.

Trudeau is seen as the best bet to build a bridge between Trump and the rest of the G7 because his government has been able to forge deep links with the USA administration and across the various levels of American politics and business, the official said.

The Bagotville base was constructed decades ago to protect Canada's crucial aluminum assets, which were used to build US military equipment and vehicles. "It will start first of all to hurt US workers, and the cost of raw materials will rise, and industries will become less competitive", he said.

"If that's not an example of national security collaboration, I don't know what is".

Trudeau heaped scorn on Donald Trump's national security justification for the new metal tariffs.

The White House was, in fact, burned down by British colonial forces in August 1814 in response to an US attack on York, Ontario, a year earlier.
